Indian Systems of Medicine

India boasts a rich variety of indigenous healthcare systems, each with a herbal basis and adapted to local cultures. The primary systems include Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, and Siddha. Homeopathy and Naturopathy, introduced by Europeans, are also widely accepted in India. In Kerala, except for Homeopathy, the Department of Indian Systems of Medicine manages these traditional systems within the public healthcare sector.

District Medical Offices

Ayurveda (Ayu + Veda) means the “science of life”. It is the oldest codified form of medicine known to the mankind. The documentation of Ayurveda is referred to in Vedas. The origin of Ayurveda is linked with the origin of Universe and developed from the various Vedic hymns describing fundamentals / philosophies about the world and life, diseases and medicines.

Speciality Institutions

Yoga is an art and science of healthy living. It is a spiritual discipline based on an extremely subtle science which focuses on bringing harmony between mind and body. The holistic approach of yoga is well established and it brings harmony in all walks of life and thus known for disease prevention, promotion of health and management of many lifestyle disorders.

Temporary Dispensaries

Tribal Ayurveda Institutions

17 Ayurveda dispensaries and 1 hospital are functioning in the tribal areas of the State, managed jointly by the department of Indian Systems of Medicine (ISM), Scheduled Tribes (ST) Development department and Local Self Government (LSG) department.

NHM Institutions

National Health Mission (NHM) is managing 257 AYUSH Primary Health Centres across the state. Medical Officer and a supporting staff are provided by NHM and the infrastructural support is provided by the concerned Local Self Government Institution. Of the 257 institutions, 214 are in Ayurveda sector, 15 are in Unani sector and 28 in Siddha sector.
